Damaged Ceiling or Drywall
Any major holes or bulges caused by water damage should be cut out of the ceiling to the nearest joists.
Scrape non damaged texture around the hole so that there is enough room to embed a joint tape, about 3 or 4 inches. If it is a comb pattern, like Circle & Fan, that you have to repair then gently scrape or wash away the whole circle or fan. It will be easier to blend in when you re-pattern.
Measure and cut a new piece of board and nail or screw to the joists so filling in the hole.
Seal the board and scraped area and allow to dry.
Follow the procedure for preparation of new plasterboards for taping the joints.
Depending on how deep the existing texture is you may have to build up the level on the new board using texture material.
Before attempting to add texture material for matching in the pattern make sure there are no ridges around the repaired area. If there are then gently scrape them away or feather them out using a wet sponge.
You are now ready to add the new texture material to pattern to match in with the existing pattern. For brush patterns this should be fairly straightforward. For the more elaborate comb patterns then if you had taken out the whole part of the pattern earlier in the process then it should be easy enough to pick up the pattern and blend in.
As the pattern starts to firm then gently sponge the edges of the material blending it in with the existing pattern so that no ridges or edges are protruding.
Once the repaired area is thoroughly dry then it can be painted to the same colour scheme as your existing wall or ceiling. Remember to follow the manufacturers recommendations for painting porous surfaces.

Repairing Cracks
Hairline cracks can be repaired by dampening the area around the crack and filling with a flexible decorators filler. The material can then be blended into the existing pattern, and any surplus removed using a clean, wet brush.
Larger cracks can be repaired but you will have apply a jointing tape and blend in the pattern. Dampen the area around the crack, about 3 or 4 inches either side, and scrape back to a smooth surface and then follow the procedure for preparation of new plasterboards for taping the crack. For blending in the pattern and painting then follow the procedure as in damaged ceilings and walls.
